Being a parent has never been easy. It can be lonely, frustrating, heartbreaking and overwhelming. All parents struggle at one time or another. Home-Start volunteers are here to help.
Families may be experiencing challenges including poor mental or physical health, postnatal depression, loneliness or isolation, bereavement, twins/triplets, single parenthood, amongst others.
We match the needs of the family with a trained volunteer who provides emotional, practical and parenting support which is free, confidential and non-judgemental. Our home-visiting volunteers call in on the family every week, for 1-2 hours, for between 6-9 months, depending on the family's needs.
Our volunteers work with families to build on their strengths and give them the support they tell us they need. This may be with help setting up routines, assisting with setting boundaries, offering emotional support, giving a helping hand with organising time or household chores, but they can also free up time for parents to take a shower or get the washing sorted out.
Volunteers are carefully matched with a family and are there to befriend and support rather than to take over or instruct.
